Jessica Valenzuela '21

Your passion. Our passion. #StevensPride

S.T.E.P Term Scholarship and William Randolph Hearst S.T.E.P. – Endowed Scholarship recipient, Jessica Valenzuela ‘21, a New Jersey resident and computer science student is appreciative of the generosity of our donors and is excited to be at Stevens to avail herself of all of the opportunities here at Castle Point.

During high school, Jessica earned the Golden Honor Roll Award, the Silver Honor Roll Award, and the President’s Award. She played recreational, travel, and school soccer, which taught her how to work well with others and leadership qualities. Additionally, Jessica participated in chorus, jazz choir, and Bella Voce, performing in such renowned places as Carnegie Hall, Mason Gross School of the Arts and Westminster Choir College.

Jessica’s interest in computer science was piqued during her game design and JavaScript class, which she took during high school. Knowing that Stevens is nationally ranked for its computer science program and that Stevens has an almost 100% placement rate upon graduation, Jessica felt that her choice of school was an easy decision. Upon enrolling, Jessica has found the campus to be close-knit and its proximity to Manhattan to be ideal.

Although she has a few years to go before she graduates, Jessica hopes to participate in some of the over 200 clubs existing on campus, serve as a campus leader, participate in the co-op experience, and learn as much as she can from her classes, peers, and professors.

Regarding the scholarships that she received, Jessica says, “Thank you so much for the S.T.E.P. Term Scholarship and the William Randolph Heart S.T.E.P. – Endowed Scholarship. Earning these scholarships allowed me to attend Stevens. Without these subsidies, I could not afford to attend here and achieve my goals as a computer scientist. Instead, I would have attended a very large public college that would have been too big for me and where I would have felt less comfortable. These scholarships allowed me to go to an outstanding school like Stevens, which will help me with my endeavors in the future. Additionally, these funds encourage me to do well in college because the generous money I am receiving requires me to remain in good academic standing. I must keep up my grades in order to stay here and succeed in my major and these scholarships give me an extra push. Ultimately, I am forever grateful for this kind gesture; thank you so much again!”
