Meet Leah Loscutoff, Head of Archives & Special Collections

Your passion. Our passion. #StevensPride

Are you or were you a student at Stevens? If so, undergraduate or graduate? If not, where did you go to school? What did you study?
No, I attended San Francisco State University, and then San Jose State University. I received a B.A. in History at SF State, and then my Master’s of Library Science (MLIS) from San Jose State.

Do you or did you work here? If so, in what capacity? For how long?
Yes, I’ve worked here for six years.

What do you like or love about Stevens? What are you passionate about here?
Stevens is a supportive environment with amazing people! I’m really passionate about documenting the history here. There are a wide variety of collections in Archives & Special Collections, and we are still learning more and more about the fascinating history and the amazing people that have come through here. I love finding out about the lesser known historical details, and helping to further disseminate those stories. There is still a lot of untapped historical information to find in our collections, which is exciting! We are also looking for more documentation to add to the archives, so alumni should contact us if they have materials that document their time here. We want to preserve Stevens history for future generations to come.

Why do you feel proud you are associated with this university?
Stevens has an exciting future ahead and a fascinating past. With so much growth and energy, it’s an inspiring place to be.

What is one of your favorite memories from your experiences here?
Conducting oral histories for the “Voices of Castle Point” project has been a wonderful experience. I enjoy learning more about the different alumni from Stevens, and hearing their personal stories that involve their own struggles, accomplishments, and personal history. This project allows us to put a face and voice to Stevens’ history, and collect stories that wouldn’t normally be documented in the archives.

Where are you from? Where were you born?
I’m from the San Francisco Bay Area, but I was born in Southern California, in a town called Oxnard.

What is your favorite book?
“Roughing It” by Mark Twain.

What is your favorite movie?
Juliet of the Spirits, 1965.

What is your favorite TV show?
I really like watching “House Hunters International.”

Do you have a pet? What kind?
Yes, a kitty named “Tiger.”

What is your favorite food?
I really love all food, so it is hard to choose! Whenever I’m back home, I really crave a dish called “shashlik,” which is basically a Russian style kebab meat dish. It reminds me of family and special occasions. My dad has the secret family recipe that I still need to learn!

If you could be anything other than what you are what would it be?
This is a tricky one, because I’m actually doing exactly what I want! Otherwise, I would probably become a conservator. I’m always fascinated with the kind of magic conservators are able to accomplish with restoring unique historical items.

Who is your favorite person?
There are so many great people in my life, but my number one favorite is my supportive and loving husband.

What makes you laugh?
Luckily, I find humor in most everyday mundane situations and laugh a lot. I feel like a sense of humor is essential for a healthy life! Most silly things can make me laugh, but I also always laugh hysterically when watching any Monty Python.

Whom or what do you admire?
I admire Martha Bayard Stevens, wife of Edwin A. Stevens and matriarch of the Stevens family. Martha always gave back to the local community. She established local training schools for boys and girls (in addition to helping establish Stevens Institute of Technology), the Willow Terrace housing, Hoboken Public Library, and many other contributions during her time here. Her commitment to helping the local community and poor families with such humility and selflessness is something to strive for. I always respect those that work hard to help others and better their community without the need for accolades.
