Spotlight on Scholarships at Stevens

Scholarships for Pre-College

Scholarships for pre-college start students on the right path. In the Stevens pre-college program, high school students live on campus for one- or two-week sessions, where they sample classes, interact with faculty, complete a project, tour STEM workplaces and learn about the college admission process. This experience can be pivotal, especially for students from underserved backgrounds who seek a life-changing college education.

“Exposure is key at the pre-college level,” said Edlyn Thompson-Mettle, the Associate Director for Diversity Programs. “There are only so many brochures that students can read or virtual tours they can take, and without this immersive experience, students might not know what to expect to begin undergraduate study. We want to inspire these students to pursue a STEM degree, and hopefully at Stevens.

Alison Mah ’23
Pre-College Scholarship Recipient
Undergraduate Major: Visual Arts & Technology

Alison grew up in a multicultural family, with Chinese roots on both sides. She was shy as a child until she discovered a love of reading and writing. “I realized the words on paper could show who I was,” Alison said. “Now I feel more comfortable expressing myself, but I still love to write because it was where I found my voice.”

By attending a pre-college session that featured courses on computer and video game development, Alison said she found a new appreciation for her ability to learn and grow. “I developed my skills as a programmer and felt a sense of belonging. Precollege has not only allowed me to experience life as a college student, it also has allowed me to be more prepared and confident in myself.”

Angelene Veloce ’23
Pre-College Scholarship Recipient
Undergraduate Major: Accounting & Analytics

Angelene heard about Stevens because she grew up in Hoboken, but she didn’t know much about applying for college. “Pre-college made me realize there are many factors to consider for choosing the school that was right for me,” Angelene said. “I got a feel for the curriculum, lectures, and labs. I attended seminars on the application process, and by the end, I was ready for Stevens.”

She envisions working in finance. “I know there are many opportunities at Stevens, being close to New York City, and having a fantastic career placement program. I feel faculty genuinely care for students, and I’m excited to be in a community where I will be welcomed, challenged, and supported!”
