Large grant from Lloyd’s leads to international workshop on resiliency

Resiliency is becoming an important word in the engineering world. Recent natural and man-made disasters and disruptions around the globe have spurred widespread interest in the idea. However, as an emerging field resilience still isn’t easily quantified, though the non-profit Lloyd’s Register Foundation has been working to change that.

With a generous grant, Lloyd’s funded a special three-day workshop at Stevens, the invitation-only Lloyd's Register Foundation International Workshop on Resilience Engineering on April 15-17, 2015. The workshop examined resilience engineering, studied ways to support its research, and looked to raise public and community awareness. Experts from 12 countries on five continents gathered at Castle Point to discuss those topics, and they have planned to publish a joint paper showing their findings.

Lloyd’s is a charity established in the United Kingdom in 2012 that funds the advancement of engineering-related education and research. It is an arm of Lloyd’s Register Group Limited, a global engineering and business services organization.

"This workshop would not have happened without the leadership, knowledge and exemplary organization provided by the Stevens Institute of Technology,” said Ruth Boumphrey, Head of Research Grants for Lloyd's Register Foundation. “We could not have found a better partner to help us."

"This workshop is a truly one-of-its-kind event,” said Michael Bruno, Feiler Chair Professor and Dean of the School of Engineering & Science. “The participants were impressed and energized by the caliber and diversity of the individuals and organizations represented at the workshop. It became immediately clear that the need to better understand and enhance resiliency is an issue that spans virtually all disciplines and all nations.”
