Class of 1971 Indicator Log
Class Secretary: William F. Stengle
Oct. 30, 2015 — It was 48 years ago that a promising group of more than 400 young men (no women yet) made their way to Castle Point to attend the prestigious engineering school named Stevens Institute of Technology, paying a monstrous annual tuition of $1,800 per year. As promised at the Convocation, about one-third of those present did not finish their degree—but four years later, the majority of us received our sheepskin. We went on to become working engineers, scientists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, writers, and even some skilled tradesmen. So, on June 3 through 5, 2016, we should congregate at Castle Point to celebrate those four years (part good/part bad/part ugly) and the 45 years since we bid farewell to Castle Point. We havemany things to discuss – our careers as engineers/ scientists, non-engineers/scientists, side avocations, retirement, children, grandchildren, etc. Bring pictures!!
Pat and I married off our baby daughter Kimberly in June in Annapolis, MD. The threatened MD thunderstorms did not occur, and we enjoyed a nice outside ceremony, then a reception at the MD Yacht Club (nobody came by boat). Nan and Ken Sullivan wandered in from Leesburg, VA. Ken is still trying to sort out getting a new start-up company rolling and an urge to retire and live out his golden years in the Leesburg mansion. With a new influx of grandchildren, he also hopes to spend more time spoiling them with Nan. Having recently retired from Johnson & Johnson after 32 years in the law department, Phil Crowley is in full gear with his own law practice doing things he actually wants to do, while enjoying his newlywed status with Diane Young, and new granddaughter Cassidy.
Eileen and Jim Morris welcomed their fourth grandchild, Thomas Robert, in June. Jim’s retirement from Met Life was short-lived, as he is now raking in the bucks as a consultant with them, while occasionally relieving Eileen on babysitting days.
Virginia and Paul Gaffney flew back to Nevada at the end of May to reclaim their RV (Da Bus) and complete their U.S. tour. After a stop in Salt Lake City and the Bonneville Salt Flats, they met up with most of the family in Yellowstone and the GrandTetons for a fun (and tiring) week of sightseeing, hiking and junior ranger classes (Paul & Ginny were turned down). Alone again, they started the trek East into Wyoming and South Dakota, catching Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the Black Hills. Heading east again, they did the Badlands (one of my favorites) and Wall Drug (neat tourist trap). Hitting the plains, they made a few stops in Nebraska, Omaha, Iowa, Illinois and Paducah, KY (Really?). One last fun weekend in Nashville did not net them a country music contract, so it was on home to North Carolina in early July. They have not revealed any future plans after their R & R at home.
Send news. I know you are out there (check one or more): still working, retired, both retired and working, vacationing, on the beach, on your boat, in the RV, napping, campaigning for Trump or Hillary, babysitting, etc.
