Wednesday

Today was a different day in the lab. Tam, the post-doc I work with in Dr. Perlman’s lab, needed to do an isolated lung experiment rather than our in vivo experiment that day. Since we needed to isolate the lung, we work with rats, and the rat must be properly euthanized before we can remove the lungs. As Tam performs the surgery, he explains in detail every step and why it needs to be performed in a particular manner. Most people would be really grossed out by this at 9 AM, but I absolutely love that I am able to have this experience. I learn so much from a 20 minute surgery with Tam because it’s a 1 on 1 learning environment. I can ask questions and he loves answering or helping me think of the answer myself. Research is such a unique experience that I get to have here at Stevens. And I am really so honored that I get to be on a project that is working towards making a difference in the medical field. This experience has helped me shape my future in that I want to continue working in the lab after graduation. My overall goal is to work in cancer research to find more solutions for treatment and hopefully one day a cure.

Thursday

Tonight we voted on potential new members of the Gear and Triangle honor society. Being part of Gear and Triangle has surrounded me with other strong leaders on campus, where I’ve been able to learn from them different methods of leadership. This organization has also given me an opportunity to give back to the campus through the different events and workshops we host throughout the semester. It’s also a place where everyone comes to have a good time and is comfortable with just being themselves. The principles of honor, leadership, fellowship, and spirt really embody all the members in this organization, and I’m so proud to be a part of that legacy.

Friday

The close proximity to NYC is one of the things I love most about being at Stevens. There is so much NYC has to offer young people looking to explore their interests, try new things, and to have a good time. I decided not to go to Founders Day ball this year, but instead go to a concert for a new artist I’ve been listening to. Every time I get to have city adventures like this, I always take a step back and remember how lucky I am to be across the river from what I think is the most amazing city in the world. It has always been my dream to live in Manhattan, maybe one day that can be very possible! But until then, me getting to be here at Stevens to live out a truly unique college experience is truly a blessing.

Sunday

Sunday nights are for Student Government meetings. I have been a senator on the SGA for three semesters now, and I have enjoyed every single minute of it. I still remember my first meeting, sitting there in amazement about how students can really make an impact on this campus. And I was really ready to be one of those driving forces of change. So far in my time as a senator, I am humbled to say that I have enacted change. I have been able to speak up for the needs of students, get people to listen, and see something be done about it. Deciding to join the SGA has probably been the smartest decision I’ve made so far in my Stevens career. It has opened so many doors for me as a student and as a student leader on campus. I have been able to establish real relationships with various administrators on campus. And most importantly, I’ve been a representative and a voice for students. And that is such an honor.
