Roundtable Discussion on the James Braxton Papers
Esteemed alumnus Dr. James Sylvester Braxton, Class of 1937 was the second African American student to graduate from Stevens, after Randolph Montrose Smith, Class of 1924. Braxton was one of the most active members of his class and in 1937 he pledged and was admitted to the Jersey City chapter of the prestigious African American fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, 82 years before a chapter was established at Stevens! Braxton went on to achieve great success after Stevens, during a time when Black engineers had limited opportunities and were few in numbers.

All Stevens students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to join us for an engaging roundtable discussion recognizing Black excellence at Stevens for Black History Month. We will delve deeper into Braxton’s fascinating life and accomplishments while pulling interesting archival documents from the newly acquired James Braxton Papers, a collection that has provided further insight into Braxton’s life, career, involvement with the civil rights movement, and his lifelong interest in building affordable housing for a more equitable society.
