CASTLE POINT NEWS

MARCH 2020

FROM THE OFFICE OF MATT GWIN, AVP ANNUAL GIVING AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

Our thoughts and hearts go out to everyone who is impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. It is hard to imagine our collective feelings, thoughts, and very real implications at this challenging time. There is a truth that many in our Stevens community have expressed in recent days; we are a community that rises together. Stevens' strength has carried us through the last 150 years and will do so through the next.

During these uncertain and unprecedented times, Stevens’ leadership has taken necessary precautions to ensure the health of our community of students, faculty, staff and alumni. All classes have been moved online for the rest of the Spring semester, staff has transitioned to working from home, and all events through June have been cancelled or postponed. This includes the upcoming April Stevens Alumni Association Board of Directors Meeting, the Stevens Awards Gala, and Alumni Weekend among others. Please regularly check stevens.edu/covid-19 for the latest updates, information, and guidance as Stevens continues to monitor the evolving situation of COVID-19.

While in-person events are on hold for the time being, please know we are working diligently to bring you some virtual community engagement opportunities. We are looking forward to sharing details on these virtual events soon. In the meantime, please stay connected by following our Facebook and Instagram.

As March is Women’s History Month, please join us in celebrating the women of Stevens in this issue. Enjoy our Alumni Spotlight, featuring Jean Savitsky ’85. Jean most recently orchestrated the expansion of the Museum of Modern Art as the organization’s director of real estate expansion.

And a word of thanks for all of those who supported the Founder’s Day Challenge. See below for the results. Especially at times like these, your continued support is critical in providing assistance to our students.

Until next month, we wish you and your family health and wellness during this difficult time. Stay healthy and stay strong, Ducks.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT - JEAN SAVITSKY ’85

For Jean Savitsky ’85, Achievement is an Art

Stevens is more than an alma mater for Jean Savitsky ’85. Her father, Daniel Savitsky ’52 is a well-known professor emeritus with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering and a longtime presence in the Davidson Laboratory. Her brother, James, is a Stevens graduate as well. “Stevens means a lot to me and my family,” Jean tells us.

Savitsky looks to her education as an important contributor to her success. “Stevens teaches you a different way of thinking and solving problems. The rigor of the curriculum makes you ready for anything.”

THE STUTE

What It’s Like Being a Woman at Stevens

I am one of the 30% that makes up the population of women on Stevens’ campus. People make jokes about the ratio and assume that it affects life here quite a bit. Being in a room full of guys when you’re the only girl is something that I had to get used to when I got here. But after spending a semester and a half here, I can officially give my thoughts on what it’s like going to Stevens as a woman. And I think my thoughts are going to surprise you quite a bit.
