CASTLE POINT NEWS

FEBRUARY 2020

FROM THE OFFICE OF MATT GWIN, AVP ANNUAL GIVING AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

February was an exciting month at Castle Point! Stevens’ 150th Anniversary celebration officially kicked off this month with the launch of stevens150.com, which includes 150 stories recognizing the university’s storied past and present, and highlighting its future. Stevens faculty, administration, and alumni came together at the Founder’s Day Soiree to explore the history of Stevens. We enjoyed sharing the love stories of our Stevens Sweethearts on Valentine’s Day – thank you to all those who sent in your stories and photos! Alumni returned to campus to celebrate the opening of the new Intercultural Space. And thank you to all who joined in our February SAA Board of Directors meeting. There is so much energy and excitement for what’s ahead, including the 150th Anniversary celebrations throughout the year, the SAA Spring Dinner and a Forum, the Stevens Awards Gala, and the 100th Stevens Alumni Weekend. Regarding Alumni Weekend, we are very close to sharing the full schedule of events with registration opening in late March. Stay tuned!

We also launched the Founder’s Day Challenge this month! Have you joined yet? You can commemorate 150 years of Stevens history and show your Stevens pride by making a gift today while helping your class and/or Greek organization secure bonus dollars for their scholarship fund. Additionally, you can receive limited-edition Stevens keepsakes and be automatically entered into a drawing for a $1,000 Amazon gift card courtesy of generous alumnus Frank Semcer ’65! Inside Stevens’ new Student Center (formerly Alexander House), the university community gathered for a reception to celebrate the opening of the new Intercultural Space on February 5. “The mission of the Intercultural Space is to empower Stevens students to create a thriving and inclusive community by cultivating a supportive space for underrepresented students and their allies on campus to foster an understanding of diversity and inclusion. Students of any background, gender identity, expression, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, citizenship status and physical or mental disability – all are welcome,” proclaimed Liliana Delman, Assistant Director for Diversity Education.

STEVENS SWEETHEARTS

In honor of Valentine’s Day, we were delighted to share the stories of some our Stevens Sweetheart couples this month. Read more about these couples and how Stevens played a role in their love stories.

CONGRATULATIONS TO WALTER ULRICH ’68 M.S. ’80!

Walter Ulrich ’68 M.S. ’80 was recently highlighted in the Journal of Corporate Renewal (JCR), the journal of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA). TMA is a professional community dedicated to turnaround management and corporate renewal. It has almost 10,000 members in 53 chapters worldwide.

Walter is currently the President & CEO of Medical Bridges, a life-changing and life-saving nonprofit serving the global poor by providing needed medical supplies and equipment to clinics and hospitals.

In the interview, Walter shared Stevens Institute of Technology was foundational to his professional success, explaining that “they taught math, science, engineering, and all these technical subjects. Unlike almost any other school at the time, and perhaps any other school today, you had to take a broad-based education. You didn’t focus much on your major until the last year and a half. That broad-based education gave me a familiarity with a lot of different things that became a context for what I’ve done the rest of my life.”
