Connecting Donors and Students

Meet Phil Crowley ’71

Founder of the Crowley Family Endowed Scholarship

Before he became a successful lawyer, Phil Crowley ’71 faced a challenge. His father encouraged him to pursue a career in science or engineering, and Phil had been accepted to Stevens. But then tragedy struck.

“My dad died of a massive heart attack in May of my senior year of high school,” Phil recalls. “He never got to see me pursue my degree at Stevens.”

Phil’s mother rallied to become the sole provider for the family, but it was tough for them to make ends meet. Fortunately, Phil found help with a scholarship from Stevens.

“It was crucial to my education and my success at Stevens to have help from scholarships, to support me while I was developing the skills that I would take on to other venues,” Phil said.

After graduating with a degree in biology, Phil spent many years as an assistant general counsel with Johnson & Johnson before forming his own firm. He now gives back to Stevens by serving as a trustee, and with his wife, Diane, Phil established the Crowley Family Endowed Scholarship. He also supports the scholarship of his fraternity, Sigma Nu.

“One of the things I have always focused on over the years is the great contribution of classes before mine in making Stevens available to me and my class,” Phil said. “I am trying to pay that forward.”

Meet Daniel Shapiro ’21

Recipient of the Crowley Family Endowed Scholarship

Daniel Shapiro ’21 is enjoying his time at Stevens. A sophomore computer science major from Bergenfield, New Jersey, Daniel made the dean’s list during his first three semesters, and he is a member of two gaming clubs.

“The computer and gaming society is where I interact with other students who have a passion for playing video games,” Daniel said. “The game development club is where I can be part of making game designs come to life. Coding my own game is a way to strengthen my ability as a programmer, and these clubs help me develop creativity for my game ideas.”

For the 2018-19 academic year, Daniel received the Crowley Family Endowed Scholarship, established by Phil Crowley ’71. “This generous donation from Mr. Crowley has allowed me to have access to a world-class education, introduced me to incredible people, and helped me through my journey at Stevens,” Daniel said.

Daniel is considering getting a graduate degree at Stevens, and ultimately he hopes to work for either a software engineering company or a financial firm that relies on computer scientists. Then, he has even bigger plans.

“I hope I will gather enough insight into how to run a successful business that I will be able to start my own company,” Daniel said. “My education at Stevens has led me towards this goal, because I have been inspired by my professors in computer science to pursue a career that makes an impact on the world.”
