CASTLE POINT NEWS

NOVEMBER 2019

FROM THE OFFICE OF MATT GWIN, AVP ANNUAL GIVING AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

Welcome to the November edition of Castle Point News. As you will see, there is much to be proud of at Castle Point this month. In the coming sections, you will read about the achievements of our alumni, the impact Stevens is making in the broader community, and review ways you can stay connected and involved with Stevens. As you read through the upcoming updates, please know that the Stevens Alumni Association Board of Directors and myself are eager to hear from you. As always, we invite your feedback and guidance and we are here to support you in getting more involved with your alma mater.

As you may have heard, a number of our athletic teams are excelling in conference play and our Women’s Soccer and Women’s Volleyball reached the NCAA tournaments. Off the field, another way our students, coaches, and former student-athletes won over the last month was through the #AllRise Challenge. Through this crowdfunding initiative, our teams collectively raised over $43,000 from over 1,000 donors. This astonishing feat is a true testament to the power of the Stevens community and the generosity put forth in directly supporting our students. A special congratulations goes to Wrestling, who brought in the most gifts with 198, and Field Hockey, who inspired 25% of their alumni student-athletes to give during this period. A big thank you to all who made this success a reality for our students.

It goes without saying that so much of our ongoing success is due to the support and advocacy of our loyal alumni. As we enter the holiday season, we are particularly thankful for all that you do for the Stevens community and, we hope to see you at one of our many upcoming holiday parties. With Thanksgiving this week, all of us here at Stevens extend our warmest wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday.

 CELEBRATION OF PHILANTHROPY

Dean’s Lecture Series Reveals that the Future of Artificial Intelligence Has Arrived

Imagine a world where medicine is made more precise with the aid of holograms, allowing doctors to digitally “see” into a patient’s body during a procedure. A world where you can give a keynote address in perfect Japanese, in your own voice, anywhere, at any time—even if you don’t speak Japanese.

This may sound like the stuff of some far-away future, but in the 2019 SES Dean’s Lecture Series, hosted by dean Jean Zu, Dr. Xuedong Huang assured an audience of more than 200 faculty, students, and staff that “all of these technologies exist today. The future is here.”

Sponsored by the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, Huang’s enthralling lecture —“Breaking Human Interaction Barriers — AI, HoloLens and Beyond”—revealed a future enriched by artificial intelligence.

A CONVERSATION WITH KATE & JON MATOS

Meet Kate and Jon Matos, both from the Class of 2008, as they share why they stay connected and are proud supporters of their alma mater! Interesting fact, Kate and Jon both worked in the Development & Alumni Engagement office back when they were students. Now as alumni living in Seattle, they are excited to help us bring Stevens to this market in a more regular way. Stay tuned!

How do you remain connected to Stevens? Why is maintaining this connection important to you?

Kate: Continuing to be active and involved in the Stevens community is a gift, professionally and personally. My financial support and participation in events allow me to demonstrate my support for this great community and be among interesting people. My peers in the Stevens alumni community are among the best, brightest, and most successful.

Jon: Giving is one way to remain connected, but by being directly involved with former classmates, fraternity brothers, and faculty, we build and maintain the network we established during our studies. All too often, the careful cultivation of my Stevens network has done everything from allowing me to explore new career opportunities, to having old professors visit us during their vacations! Maintaining a connection to Stevens is central to supporting the time investments made while studying at Stevens.
